How to Write an Analytical Essay
When your task is about an analytical essay, you do not have to worry about it. All you have to do is decipher the core of such an essay genre. In reality, an essay that is analytical comprises some sort of analysis which does not necessary have to be scientific. An analysis could manifest itself in the writer’s opinion, claims, agreement, disagreement, and investigation of a certain topic or item. One central point that should be made clear is the fact that there should be some focal aspects that make up the analysis.
Explaining a poem should not be confused with analyzing it. You know that you are conducting a poem analysis when you choose a specific aspect to focus on for the study of the piece. For instance, you can undertake a thematic analysis that focuses on the theme of love in that poem; as such you probe how love was pictured through linguistic tools and imagery. The conceptual and structural manipulation of words used by the author could also be central to your analysis.
It is worth acknowledging that an analytical essay is not limited to topics, texts, and concepts. Indeed, it goes beyond that to include the analysis of paintings, images, movies, characters, tables, graphs, and charts. Each analytical essay depends on the object of analysis. For example, if you are analyzing a movie, you could focus on the cinematographic techniques used or misused, which would shape your claim, or argument, about it.
The phase that comes prior to writing is quite important because it is an opportunity for you to scrutinize the item of analysis to find out if there are any noticeable repeated patterns, whether conceptual or structural. Please note that an analysis could be based on the present elements as well as on the absent ones. The absence of a necessary aspect could be indicative of certain state of affairs, or goals. That said, the absence of punctuation in a poem, for instance, is not arbitrary, it may be analyzed differently, depending on the writer’s interpretation.
